    The Rev. Theodore Berktold, Rector

The Reverend Theodore A. Berktold (Father Ted) became the rector at St. Mary’s on January 1, 1982, the 125th year of the parish. Our membership, our organizational strength, and our financial base have grown under his leadership.  We have worship services in Spanish and English, and we provide outreach programs to the poor and the homeless, Sacred Heart Medical Center, the University of Oregon, and the Lane County jail.  In the past few years, we have expanded our programs for youth and seniors.  As rector, Father Ted is assisted with paid staff and volunteers.

Father Ted graduated from Episcopal Divinity School in 1971 (B.D.) and from Union Theological Seminary in 1972 (S.T.M.).  From 1972 - 1974 he pioneered a contract ministry in small churches in Minnesota.  From 1974 -1979 he was the Rector of St. John the Divine, Moorhead, Minnesota and the Vicar of St. Luke’s, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.  Prior to his call to St. Mary’s, Father Ted was Canon at the Pro-Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Brussels.  Father Ted has made many professional contributions at the diocesan and national levels, including long range planning, Ministry in Higher Education, and stewardship.  He has served as deputy to two general conventions, Dean of the Convocation, and member of Diocesan Council and Standing Committee.  He is Chaplain of the South Willamette Valley Chapter of the Order of St. Luke.

Father Ted’s long and successful tenure has had a great influence on the people in the Eugene-Springfield community.  He has developed an endearing relationship with parishioners.  He is a humble rector -- caring, compassionate, sensitive, supportive, and focused on the issues and people of St. Mary’s.  He is nonjudgmental, a good listener, and encourages parishioners to grow in their ministries.  He has a bright, quick mind and has the unique ability to relate to many people of different intellectual abilities and economic levels.  He is positive and open to new programs and new ideas.  He is enthusiastic, energetic and has a great sense of humor.
